DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS – Coach Lawrence Sarenana lsarenana@novamil.org
The Athletics Program supports the Academic Program by providing motivation for students to do well in their academic classes so that they can be eligible to participate in nearly every available CIF (California Interscholastic Federation) (and many non-CIF) sports. NVMI offers more sports than any other charter school in California, giving students many opportunities to participate. The Athletics Department also holds weekly homework/tutoring sessions to help student-athletes keep current in their classes. Additionally, an extensive interscholastic sports program for both middle and high school students exists at NVMI. At present, we offer the following sports for middle school:

  • From the extracurricular and intramural sports programs, the grade-level challenges, and the daily integration of movement in a variety of classrooms, athletics is a tool for helping cadets see how what they are learning from all of the other pillars plays out in a variety of environments.
  • The entire PE program is designed around helping cadets achieve the Athletics SLOs.  NVMI’s PE program, and emphasis on extracurricular sports is one of the most important aspects of the school and provides cadets with opportunities they would not have elsewhere.
  • We expanded our interscholastic athletics program over the last three years and now offer 100% of the available sports in the California Interscholastic Federation, with the exception of badminton which the Los Angeles Section does not permit.
