A familiar face at NVMI, I have been the Dean of Students for 11 years (first at NOVA and then NVMI). As many of you know I am not only the Dean, but also an NVMI parent. My youngest son is in the 8th grade, Music Company. My husband of 25 years and I have 3 sons we are tremendously proud of. I graduated from Ashford University in Clinton Iowa with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. I am also a Chief Warrant Officer 1 in the California Cadet Corps. In spite of the fact that we got lost (twice) on the land navigation course, I would say that Mrs. Excell, Dr. Tartaro and I had almost as much fun at camp as the kids!
I have studied the classroom management techniques of many of the leaders in that area of education such as Rick Smith, Fred Jones, Robert Marzano, Randy Sprick, and Jim Knight. I truly believe in the Citizenship Philosophy (see page 147 of your planner!) at NVMI, that each young person wants to be successful and achieve to the greatest extent possible.
Along with all of the academic knowledge that school imparts to our children I believe that we need to help them fill their “life skills toolbox” with tools that will help them become strong, independent, self-sufficient leaders in their communities. We help them grow with conflict resolution skills, self-awareness, empathy for others and self-confidence.
I am probably most well-known at NVMI for having broken my hand while playing volleyball last year, being a not-so-secret crazy cat lady in the making and for being a rabid – I mean avid – Los Angeles Kings hockey fan. Go Kings Go!
