Board of Trustees

The North Valley Military Institute Board of Trustees is a well rounded team of volunteers with diverse backgrounds and experiences. Board members are responsible for Governance of the school. They create and support the long term vision of the school, actively oversee the school’s core values and mission, ensure the school’s financial viability, and hire and review NVMI's Superintendent.

Current Board Members:

  • Chairman - Dr. Daniel Villanueva – Dr. Villanueva is an independent contractor working to support various community colleges and educational institutions in Southern California. He also teaches as an adjunct faculty member at California State University Northridge, has served on various non-profit governing boards, and been involved in development and fund raising efforts for various non-profit organizations.  Dr. Villanueva worked in fiscal services at the Los Angeles County Office of Education for more than a decade. He brings a wealth of experience in fiscal, facilities, emergency response, human resources, fund raising, curriculum, and K-12/community college operations. TERM EXPIRES 30 June 2024
  • Secretary - Lanny West – Mr. West is a retired businessman who has served on the north Valley Charter Academy and subsequently North Valley Military Institue board since its inception. He served as the North Valley Charter Academy and then NVMI board Chairman for more than a decade, and brings a wealth of business, finance, human resource, and community relations experience. TERM EXPIRES 30 June 2024
  • Treasurer -  Matthew K. Smith was a Director and then Superintendent at the Griffin Technology Charter Group in Vallejo California from 2010-2020 after having served as a public school administrator in the Martinez and New Haven Unified School Districts. He now serves as the Director at Springboard School Services. TERM EXPIRES 30 June 2025
  • Member - Captain (Retired) John Pruit – John W. Pruitt, III was born in Atlanta, Georgia,  and is a proud graduate of U. S. Coast Guard Academy as an Electrical Engineer. During his career in the Coast Guard, John deployed for over 12 years around the world working with every branch of the U. S. military and numerous nations. During this time John commanded three Coast Guard ships and was Officer in Charge of a law enforcement detachment. John's operations carried him from the Bering Sea of Alaska, throughout Central and South America, the Persian Gulf, and untold places in between. John retired from the U. S. Coast Guard after 23 years of service, as a Captain (O-6) in 2018 and is an entertainment consultant and TV personality. TERM EXPIRES 30 June 2025
  • Member - Master Sergeant, USMC (Retired) John Martinez, (Master Sergeant Martinez is a member of the Crisis Response Team with the United States Secret Service in Washington, DC. He retired from the Marine Corps after  distinguished career that included multiple deployments including a stint assigned to the Mobile Training Team Chief, U.S. Marine Corps Forces Pacific where he trained Marines from the Maldives in military tactics. He held multiple senior leadership roles, including the role where he got to know NVMI as the Operations Chief of the School of Infantry West at Camp Pendleton, CA. His areas of expertise include logistics, training, operations, security, community relations, and operational planning.  - TERM EXPIRES 30 June 2025
  • Member Mike Camorlinga – Mr. Camorlinga is a proud NVMI parent of an NVMI high schooler and a business owner of the very successful Lulu's Restaurant in the San Fernando Valley. He was raised in Southern California, attended college here, and brings to the board a wealth of experience in finance, personnel management, strategic planning, investment, and business development. - TERM EXPIRES 30 June 2024
  • Member Rocky Huynh Rocky Huynh is a graduate of the University of California at Santa Cruz, where he graduated with honors with a Bachelor’s Degree in Technology and Information Management. Rocky attended the Oakland Military Institute College Preparatory Academy, where he eventually became a cadet senior officer with responsibility for various command and staff roles in the Corps of Cadets. During and immediately after his time at UCSC, he worked for both Walmart global eCommerce and Apple in Global Threat Response. He currently works as a Business Analyst for Data Protection, Privacy, and Compliance for Cisco. He brings to the NVMI board perspective both as a former cadet at a public military academy charter school, but also as a successful college graduate and someone with expertise in the field of technology. - TERM EXPIRES 30 June 2025
  • Member Cesley Frost is the Middle School Principal at Bay Area Technology School. She previously served as a teacher, Dean, and Middle School Principal at the Oakland Military Institute, and served as an NVMI Board member in NVMI’s inaugural year. She is a frequent Visiting Committee Chairperson for the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. TERM EXPIRES 30 June 2025
  • Member Julie Ward is an NVMI parent/guardian and operates a small business in the Sunland/Tujunga community. She is a longtime parent and community advocate and volunteer and brings community organizing and parent empowerment experience to the NVMI board. TERM EXPIRES 30 June 2025
  • Lieutenant Colonel (Retired), Tom Coate, United States Air Force. Retired from the United States Air Force after a distinguished career that involved developing and operating some of the United States’ most classified space programs and projects. His military career highlights include working with the Department of Defense and the Department of National Intelligence to improve information sharing following 9/11, working with Congress on the Air Force’s budget for space, and deployment to Afghanistan as part of the U.S. Army’s nation building mission. During his substantial career on active duty, he was also involved with over twenty football programs. He currently works as a Senior Space Consultant for the US Space Force and Head Football Coach for Grace Brethren High School. TERM EXPIRES 30 June 2024

NVMI Board members can be reached via email at NVMI_BOARD@novamil.org or by calling the main office at 818-368-1557 and leaving a message. NVMI's main office is open from 6:30 AM - 5:30 PM Monday - Friday.

NVMI's Board holds meetings in compliance with The Brown Act. Members of the NVMI and the greater community at large are invited to attend Board meetings on the NVMI Campus. Agendas are posted on the main campus AND on this web page. Board meetings generally occur at 10:00 AM on the fourth Saturday of each month (Except July).
